No curfew in Srinagar despite separatist shutdown

No curfew in Srinagar despite separatist shutdown

Srinagar, Sep 4 – Authorities did not impose curfew or restrictions in Srinagar Saturday even though separatists called for a shutdown across Kashmir Valley.

‘There are no restrictions anywhere in Srinagar city today (Saturday). Also, there are no restrictions anywhere in north and central Kashmir areas,’ a police officer said here.

‘Preventive restrictions have been imposed in Pulwama and Anantnag towns in south Kashmir only,’ he said.

Hardline Hurriyat group headed by Syed Ali Geelani has issued a fresh protest calendar, asking people to observe a valley-wide shutdown Saturday as part of the group’s ‘Quit Kashmir’ campaign that has crippled normal life across the valley during the last three months.

Shops, educational institutions and other businesses remained closed in summer capital Srinagar in response to the separatist call.

‘Everything else can be made up, but how do we make up the tremendous setback that the valley’s educational system has suffered?’ asked Nazir Ahmad, 47, whose daughter is Class 10 student here.

Public transport went off the roads though private vehicles plied normally on uptown city roads in Srinagar. Some three-wheelers were also seen on the roads here.

Many banks functioned here unlike in the past when they would be shut during shutdowns or curfew.

As many as 65 people have lost their lives in the ongoing unrest that started here June 11.
