The Tawi River flows along the left bank of the Chenub River. It is, one of the major tributaries of the River Chenab. Considered holy and sacred, it has great religious and historical importance attached to it. It starts flow with the melting water of Kali Kundi Glacier. The catchment area of the River Tawi is more than two thousand and one hundred square KMS.

The stretch of the river adds up to one hundred forty one Kms and it falls within the districts: Jammu,Doda,Udhampur It has its name attached to the inception of the city. According to historians, King Jamboolochan saw an amazing sight on the bank of Tawi.

He watched in astonishment as a goat and a lion drank water from the same place. He decided to set up a town beside the river and named it Jamboo, which changed to Jammu in the course of time.Although it enhances the beauty of Jammu,it itself has been polluted by ill usage. The main concern now is to clean up the river and give back its original crystal clear look.
