Srinagar, July 23 : Burnt down by militants eighteen years ago, a 400-years-old temple has been thrown open to the devotees in Kulgam town, about 75 kilometers from here.

Hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits thronged the Kulwagishuri temple in South Kashmir during its reopening ceremony. Many Kashmiri Pandits attended the ceremony from different parts of the country.

The outbreak of militancy had forced Hindu residents to flee the Valley in 1999.

"We are happy to come back here," said Makhan Lal, a Kashmiri Pandit.
Over 500 Muslims, including women and children also joined the celebrations.

"Our aim is to revive the culture of the Kashmiri Pandits. Traditionally Muslims also participated in the festivals. We are working towards maintaining the tradition and nurturing it," said All Party Migrant Coordination Committee (APMCC) chairman Vinod Pandit.

An important Vaishnovite shrine, Kulwagishuri temple was set on fire by militants in 1992.

Mata Kulwagishuri Prabandik Committee (MKPC), in coordination with APMCC, undertook renovation of the temple complex.
